    I think that Modals do have a place when it is appropriate that content “should be reduced to substates of other screens.” As long as the substate screen info is pretty much self-contained (and does not need any clarifying reference or info from the containing page) I think that Modals can be a useful tool in a Web Design arsenal. As with any other such tool, Modals can be abused for the sake of trying to bring a “cool” factor to a web site’s UI.
